Does SEO Still Matter Now That People Ask AI Instead of Googling?

Does SEO still matter now that people ask AI instead of Googling? Yes, and here's why: AI search is built on top of SEO foundations. What to keep doing and what to adjust.

Short answer: absolutely. And not in a "well, sort of, for now" way. SEO matters more than ever, for a reason most business owners haven't heard explained clearly yet.

Here it is.

AI Search Is Built on Top of SEO

When ChatGPT searches the web, when Perplexity cites a source, when Google generates an AI Overview, where do you think that information comes from? It comes from the same indexed, crawled, ranked web that traditional SEO has always been about.

AI tools don't have a separate, secret internet. They pull from the SEO foundations and best practices you've already built into your website, or failed to build. A site that Google can't crawl properly is a site AI tools can't read properly. A business with no authority signals in traditional search has no authority signals to offer an AI either.

So the rule of thumb is simple: AI search inherits your SEO. Strong foundation, strong AI visibility. Weak foundation, invisible in both.

What This Means in Practice

It means the fundamentals you may have been tempted to deprioritize are now doing double duty.

Your site structure, your page speed, your headings, your internal links, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your backlinks. All of it feeds two systems at once: the traditional rankings people still use every day, and the AI answers a growing share of your customers are starting to trust.

I'll be honest about something we see constantly. Business owners hear "AI is replacing Google" and conclude SEO is dying, so they pause the work. Then six months later they're invisible in both places, because the AI tools had nothing solid to find. The businesses pulling ahead right now are doing the opposite: doubling down on fundamentals while their competitors hesitate.

The Adjustment: Write for How AI Reads

SEO still matters, but how you execute it should evolve. Two shifts worth making:

Think about quotability. Ask yourself how each page would be referenced by an AI engine. Does it contain clear, specific statements an AI could lift and cite? "We've remodeled over 200 kitchens in the Coachella Valley since 2015" is quotable. A wall of vague marketing copy is not.

Prioritize usefulness over keyword density. AI systems are good at recognizing content that genuinely helps a reader versus content that exists to rank. Write pages that answer real questions with real information, and structure them so the answer stands out clearly. That approach wins in Google's traditional results and in AI citations at the same time. Our post on how AI search rankings work goes deeper on what AI engines actually look for.

One Foundation, Two Payoffs

This is the part I find genuinely encouraging for small businesses. You don't need two separate strategies fighting for your budget. Good SEO done with AI search in mind is one investment that pays out in both channels.

The businesses that treat this moment as a reason to strengthen their SEO will own the AI answers in their market. The ones that treat it as a reason to quit will hand that visibility to a competitor.
